More about the cup

The Breeder’s Cup is a one day event at the end of the season and showcases all the year’s hottest stars. Horses, owners, and jockeys are highlighted during the event and they all help making the Breeders’ Cup an essential and memorable horse race. The idea of the cup is the continued support and improvement of Thoroughbred racing and breeding, and the pursuit of positive sports fan awareness of the whole industry.

Most people consider the Breeders' Cup the world's finest day of horse racing. It used to consist of eight races, but this year three more races were added. The most important race is the 1 ¼ mile Breeders' Cup Classic, which carries a purse of $5 million and attracts the most accomplished dirt horses from around the world. Breeders’ Cup has eight elite divisions. The divisions are Classic, Turf, Distaff, Sprint, Filly and Mare Turf, Turf Mile, Juvenile, Juvenile Fillies, all classified as Grade 1 races, plus the new three that are not considered as grade one yet: Dirt Mile, Juvenile Turf, Filly & Mare Sprint.

The National Thoroughbred Racing Association (NTRA) sponsors the Breeders Cup, the national industry trade group for Thoroughbred horseracing in North America. The NTRA and Breeders' Cup Limited conduct the Breeders' Cup World Thoroughbred Championships.

Breeders Cup is the season ending "Super Bowl" of horse racing.
